July Birthstones - Ruby
Rubies are a precious gemstone, with a hardness that is second only to diamonds. They are actually the same mineral (corundum) as sapphires, and it is their distinctive deep red color that sets them apart. The name ruby comes from the latin word ruber, meaning red, and in ancient Sanskrit, ruby translated to ratnaraj, which means “king of precious stones.”
Rubies have been admired for thousands of years, and have been associated with love, passion, energy, and health - the red color has symbolized blood, the life force. In addition to being the birthstone for July, rubies are a traditional gift for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.
We have a selection of natural ruby pieces from artists such as Adel Chefridi, Catherine Weitzman, Polly Wales, and Kristin Ford. We also carry some synthetic alternatives with a beautiful color to stand in for this precious gem!
