Gold-filled jewelry is created by a pressure & heat bonding process that adheres a layer of real gold onto a different metal base. US standards require that gold-filled jewelry must have 1/20 weight of the jewelry piece in gold. Gold-filled pieces have a relatively thick layer of gold, are quite durable, resistant to water & everyday wear, and safer for sensitive skin. Most high quality gold filled pieces look similar to 14k gold, and can last many years because the layer of gold is 5 to 10 times thicker than that produced by most types of gold plating.
