August Birthstone - Peridot

SHOP PERIDOT JEWELRY

Happy August! If you were born this month, your birthstone is the beautiful bright green peridot. Unlike some other types of gemstones which can come in a wide variety of colors, peridot is always green, due to the iron in its composition. Since ancient times, peridot has been associated with light and the sun, and is believed to bring good health, peace, delight, and renewal. It is also the stone used the represent a 15th anniversary.

Peridot was mined by ancient Egyptians, who called it the "gem of the sun." Today it can be found in many countries; one of the world's highest-producing mines is in Arizona. It can even be found in outer space! Small gems of peridot have been discovered in pallasite meteorites and comet dust. In 1749 a pallasite meteorite containing many large peridot gems was discovered on hilltop in Siberia that is believed to have fallen to the earth's surface as early as 14.8 million years ago.
